This photograph was taken on a 5 week trip around Iceland in 2013.Time
The weather was the usual Icelandic mix of sun and rain during my time on the Snaefellsnes pensinsula but you can't stay indoors when travelling. As it was nearly 5 years ago now since I took the image I can't remember the exact details but it would have been around the middle of the day in October.Lighting
Stormy weather with the sun behind one makes for nice rainbows and I was lucky.Equipment
At that time I was using a Nikon D7000 camera with the Nikkor 18-200mm lens and a Sigma 10-20mm lens.Inspiration
It's an iconic spot so of course way up on the list of places to visit in Iceland.Editing
I normally do a fair bit of processing of my images as taking them is only the first step. I use a very old copy of photoshop which is perfectly adequate for me. I also use Nik software and do a fair bit of work using luminosity masks and i also often blend images in hdr to handle higher dynamic range subjects.In my camera bag
I have now switched to an Olympus OMD mirrorless system which way outperforms my old dSLR. I normally travel with 2 camera bodies now an EM1Mk2 and and EM5Mk2 as a backup. My usual lens is the Olympus 12-100mm PRO lens but I also use the 12-40mm PRO and 40-150mm PRO. I also take the Panasonic 100-400mm lens when I think I will need the reach. I used to use a Panasonic 7-14mm for wide angle but have now got a Laowa 7.5mm f2 prime which weighs only 200gm, is tiny AND it takes filters so the 7-14 might well take a back seat. I also use a few prime lenses when needed: 20mm f1.7, 45mm f1.7 and a 75mm f1.7. These are mainly for street and portrait use. The weight of most of the lenses is so low that I can take them all with me.Feedback
When travelling you usually don't have the option of re-visiting a place to get better light but if possible it's a good idea to try and arrange an itinerary where you do have the possibility. I don't like to rush travels so I try and spend extra time in each place. It costs so much for me to get to most places from Australia that a few extra days where I am going doesn't add much to the overall cost. Better to be bored than to be upset about missing an opportunity :-) Landscape photography usually means sunrises and sunsets but these are chancy and only last for a short time so you have to make use of the full day. My favourite weather is when there are stormy skies which add mood and when you can get dramatic lighting. There are way too many very good landscape images in the world so you have to think about how to take a photograph which is different. You also have to create a strong composition which means learning something about how painters construct their images and that does NOT include the rule of thirds!
