Behind The Lens

Location

Salt Spring Island, British Columbia

Time

Late morning, early afternoon. Dramatic shadow under the brown goat's ear says that the sun was right overhead. Not the best time to shoot portraiture, but with a curves adjustment, the contrast can be adjusted.

Equipment

Nikon D300. No flash. Handheld at 50mm/2.8

Inspiration

We were staying at an eco farm in Salt Spring. Every day, our friends would take all the goats for a walk. The spectacle of goats running freely in the beautiful spot was quite inspiring. I just followed the goats and kept shooting.

Editing

I had to do a curves adjustment to reduce shadows and there was a reed right in front of one of the goats that was very distracting. I used the clone stamp tool to get rid of it.

In my camera bag

Today, I carry my Nikon D610, a 24-70/2.8 lens, a 70-200/2.8 lens and an SB600 flash.

Feedback

With animals, my best shots are when there is the time and space to allow them to behave naturally. I have to be quick because sometimes the moments they reveal themselves to me are super fast. It is really easy to miss a good shot. I try to just give them their space and let them be who they are.
