Behind The Lens

Location

Image was shot at local fishing lake located in Bowling Green, Kentucky .

Time

Winter season was rounding up and the warm spring weather brought in an unexpected rainstorm. We combated the pouring rain the whole shoot. Her hair was soaking wet and matted to her face, which added about an extra hour in post, fluffing and drying.

Lighting

We had nothing but overcast skies and murky nightmare lighting.

Equipment

I used an 18-135mm Lens, keeping my exposure low for a wider aperture. Overcast was certainly an enemy there. I Placed my camera on a tripod to avoid camera shake and keep all my frames in the exact location for post compositing.

Inspiration

The clients mother started flattering me with how much she enjoyed my surreal work . She was convinced I was capable of creating anything magical anywhere, with anyone. While getting herself worked up over the possibilities she pointed at the lake and said "I bet you can even make her walk on that water, can't you?" Challenge excepted .

Editing

The entire image is a Frankenstein of composited body parts. The lake itself consists of several separate shots. The model was made to pose in numerous positions in shallow water. Then, like a puzzle, they were meticulously pieced together in post.

In my camera bag

I own one fairly inexpensive camera I bought 3 years ago, and a tripod I found at a yard sale. I pack extra cards and travel light. It works for me.

Feedback

First tip, don't capture something similar. Capture something the rest of us haven't. Second, never wear high heels in a lake, unless you're about to make a person walk on water.
