Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Flamingo Gardens in Davie, FL during their annual Walk in the Wild.

Time

This was late morining (around 10am) so the sun was up past the horizon but not yet directly overhead. The clouds helped filter some of the brightness from the morning light too.

Lighting

I really got lucky with the natural lighting that morning. It was sunny but with some clouds so the lighting just worked out. Also, the sun was at my back when taking this photograph.

Equipment

This was shot with a Sony Nex-7 and a telephoto lens.

Inspiration

I absolutely love owls and this one was beautiful! I had to be patient because he was not wanting to look my way. After taking this shot, I really liked the profile and detail of his eye. It was more interesting to me than the straight forward shots.

Editing

The only post processing on the photo was a very slight tweak to the contrast.

In my camera bag

I always carry cleaning cloths, an extra battery and a rain poncho. I usually have 2 lenses with me - a wide angle and a telephoto.

Feedback

Patience! When photographing birds I find my self snapping a few shots right away and the doing a lot of waiting and watching. That's usually when the I get the best photo. The best advise I have is to pay attention to the subject. Be patient, watch and take shots as your waiting for your "moment". You may be surprised to find the perfect shot was the one taken while you were waiting.
