Great light and contrast in this one. I doubt a bit about the great white background area right from the kid; somehow a bit distracting...

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this image in the barn at my home in Sooke, BC Canada. I wanted to capture the bond my son had with this particular horse and loved how the image turned out.

Time

This was taken late morning which worked well for my little guy who still napped in the afternoons. I prefer to work around kids schedules instead of my own for light preferences. I would rather have the challenge of difficult light then the challenge of a tired toddler ;)

Lighting

This was taken in February which generally means grey skies around here. The area in front of the stall where the child is standing is covered but still allows a lot of light to come in to highlight him and the horses face.

Equipment

For this image I used a Nikon D3200 and my 50mm, natural light only.

Inspiration

This is a fairly large young horse with a soft spot for my tiny toddler. I loved the way he would drop his head and his eyes would soften whenever my son was nearby. I wanted to capture that connection.

Editing

Yes I use adobe camera raw and photoshop. I did some dodge & burn as well as some softening and warming layers on this particular image.

In my camera bag

I like to keep it simple when it comes to equipment. I always have my 50mm & grey card with me and usually pack an extra lens, batteries/sd cards to a shoot. For images of my own kids I usually don't bring a bag of equipment but just wear my camera and have fun with it!

Feedback

With children and any animal the number one consideration should always be safety for both subjects. I love to capture the connection my children have with animals and I think capturing that connection is easiest when done in the most natural way possible without a lot of fuss and props. Just let them be safe and happy with each others company then enjoy capturing the little magical moments that happen along the way.
