The light was very difficult. The scorching sun was bleaching wide chunks of the land, so shooting the classic type of landscape was out of the question. I decided to use the plentiful steam as a screen and give the image a touch of mystery.Equipment
Nikon D200, Nikkor 18-200mm, handheldInspiration
I simply liked the primal, uncomfortable and disorientating feel this otherworldly landscape was throwing at the visitors. The idea was to try to capture the mood within the frame giving the viewer a sense of immediacy.Editing
Not a lot. The most difficult part was dealing with the wide dynamic range created by the harsh light. So, usual dodging and burning were my best friends here.In my camera bag

Don’t be afraid to turn your lens towards the sun. The light may be unfavorable but changing your approach to capturing a particular moment can bring unexpected benefits. This image wasn't planed; it was presented to me while I was pivoting around my axis. Be careful though while looking towards the sun – make it quick, as looking through the lens is as dangerous as with your naked eye.
