that's actually a really good point Margie, essential to know the rules before breaking them and knowing how to break them. The major emphasis here is no sky but still presenting a full scene. Thank you for your input.

Location
This was taken at the Sebastiani Vineyard in the Santa Rita Hills in Santa Barbara County, California.Time
About 4pm on a Sunday afternoonLighting
The shadows of the afternoon made this shot. The natural undulations where the light and shadows combined were begging to be recorded.Equipment
Canon T3i with a converter on a Zeiss 135mm f2.8, shot wide open, handheld. I also like the fact that the Canon T3i has a moveable back screen and with magic lantern there are more subtle methods to control the camera.Inspiration
This is one of those stories of a photoshoot that shouldn't have happened. It was a late Sunday morning, I was uninspired and bored, so I put a message out on Facebook for any suggestions. A winemaker responded and asked if I could go take some shots of this vineyard where she sources fruit from. I hadn't explored this vineyard before, so I thought why not. I lived about 5 miles from here and it was a full blue sky day, but here on this side of the valley there were stunning clouds and a clean bright light. I have my camera programmed for my own taste in monochrome and took a lot of shots of the clouds over the hills as the sun was going down. Driving slowly around the vineyard, I was stopping every couple of minutes to get the right angles for light and clouds and shadows. When this view came into sight, I studied it for a while and knew I didn't want any sky in the shot. Likewise, there can be different drama between vertical and horizontal. As this vineyard covers a few hundred acres I'd also taken quite a few "Brenizer method" shots to give scale and scope. When I started processing the images, this one just popped for me.Editing
Not much, I always shoot in RAW so a bit of touch up in PS. As I mentioned above, I shoot in monochrome, but RAW always records in colour. In this instance the colour won out.In my camera bag
Canon T3i, with battery grip. A Zeiss 135mm f2.8, Zeiss 85mm f2.8, Zeiss 50mm f1.7. Leitz Tiltall tripod, 6 extra batteries, at least 2 spare 32GB cards (all my cards have Magic Lantern encoded on them as well), ND filter.Feedback
Don't just choose one spot and call it a day, with landscapes you have to explore. Even a few steps to the side etc. can make a huge difference. Shoot, shoot and shoot more. Have patience with light and clouds and shadows especially, you can't always plan, but with experience you can anticipate. I don't use zoom lenses, only glass primes, so I sometimes test the same shot with these lenses as the effects can be really different. Alternatively I might only take one lens with me all day then discipline myself with it's capabilities and limitations. I may have missed some great images this way, but I have always learned something new as well. Never rest on your laurels, work harder to improve what you do.
