Behind The Lens
Location
I was out with my father in law taking long exposure pictures around my home city, Perth, which has also been called the "City of Lights"Time
About 11pm during the night. It was the first time since high school that I had played with a cameraLighting
The really bright building on the right, the state library, changes colours, but other than that it's all ambient lightEquipment
My camera is a Nikon D3200 mounted on a Manfrotto MT294A3 using the Nikkor 55-300mm which was one of the lens in the twin lens kitInspiration
I wanted to get a long exposure shot that showed the lights of Perth off, while trying to get a smooth looking river to have the lights reflect off. I'd seen some of the shots by other contributors on ViewBug, of New York with the old pier pilings in the water and wanted to show Perth in a similar light.Editing
Just the basics. At the time I didn't have the skills to really make it pop with any post processing. I'm still learning now. I also like to keep what I see through the lens on the screen with not a lot adjustments on post.In my camera bag
As mentioned before the D3200, the Nikkor 55-300 with the 18-55 from the other half of the twin lens kit. A Nikkor 50mm prime as well as some cleaning equipment. If anyone wants to help with improving the kit they are more than welcome.Feedback
Know your equipment. If you don't, just experiment with it. Apart from photography at high school, with film by the way and really showing my age in the process, I'm self taught. If you can learn to shoot in fully manual mode it would certainly help. That way you can control the light the way you want. After learning your camera, a good tripod with a shutter release or remote so you don't knock the camera when you take the shot. Other than that make it fun
