Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken near Jacksonville, Florida at the Timucuan Ecological and Historical Preserve while on a hike towards the marshes.

Time

The photo was taken at about 3 in the afternoon on a steamy summer day with high humidity, no wind, and intermittent sunlight.

Lighting

I am attracted to contrasts of light and dark as well as color patterns that you can pop through color manipulation. This particular shot attracted my attention as I immediately thought of "the eye or Sauron" from The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age.

Equipment

I used a Cannon Rebel, no lens, no flash on the portrait setting.

Inspiration

I find the contrasts in this photo mesmerizing. First, there's the contrast of dark and light; then there's the contrast of textures and shapes, and finally there's the contrast of depth. It's like a wood hand holding a door open into a dark, impenetrable recess - eerie yet inviting.

Editing

Not a lot. I manipulated the contrast and color saturation a bit, but I have to admit, it was a pretty great shot to start with.

In my camera bag

It's usually just me and my Rebel. I have a telephoto lens, but I don't use it very much.

Feedback

Look for textures and contrasts in the simplest of things.
