I've been asked quite a few times where this was taken so I will share so others can experience the same joy. The Humpbacks are in the plentiful, Bay of Banderas, Mexico around January with their young. For $100. you can get a guy in a zodiac to take you out to them and if you don't topple into the whale soup that'll be all around you then the opportunity for a memorable shot can easily occur. In January 2014 I visited Nuevo Vallarta for a week and while there booked a Zodiac excursion through Vallarta Adventures, out to see the Humpbacks who were visiting the waters around The Bay of Banderas.Time
It was mid morning by the time we got out to where the whales were playing. I somehow managed to capture this shot while standing in the rocking zodiac and was in awe with what I got when this beauty lept so mightily out of the waters. To date this is my favourite image because of it's content and how difficult it was to get this shot in a moving boat filled with moving morons who behaved as though they were on a private tour, standing in front of other people while they shot and getting in the way. I just held my patience in check and kept trying. I think it paid off.Lighting

I have an old Canon Powershot SX20 IX That I use for things like this as I don't have to carry my Canon Rebel Sl1 and bag with me and change lenses when it can't be conveniently done.Inspiration

If you're stuck on a listing zodiac with a bunch of ignorant tourists just breath and focus on the shot unless you want pictures of you tossing stupid folk off the boat all over the internet.
