Location
This photo was taken during a summer road trip around California. We'd taken a quick detour through Lassen National Park with the hopes of catching a glimpse of the volcano before the sun set. I felt so lucky to see this view! I grabbed my camera, jumped out the car and ran down to the meadow to catch a shot before the sun vanished!Time
This photo was taken just before sunset. It was one of those lucky moments where the sun burst through the clouds and made the scene look magical for a brief moment! I'm so glad I had my camera ready with my wide angle lens on!Lighting
I wanted the final image to look warm and inviting, but also serene and wild. This is such a beautiful part of the world I really wanted to to it justice.Equipment
I used my Canon 70D with the 10-22mm lens. As always, I used my tripod as I took three different exposures so I could blend them to bring out the highlights and shadows. A tripod is essential for shots like this!Inspiration
The reason I leapt out of the car and ran down to this meadow to take my sunset shot of the park was that it had so many beautiful elements. The meadow itself is stunning, with the tranquil stream running through it. It leads your eye through the image towards the distant peak. I wanted to get across the tranquil beauty of the scene, which contrasts with the potential power of the distant volcano.Editing
This is a HDR image. I blended three exposures to create this image and bring out the detail in the highlights and shadows. I also did some general tidying of the scene, particularly the water (removal of distracting leaves etc).In my camera bag
My bag is so heavy! I really want to switch to a lighter mirrorless system! My daily bag includes: a Canon 70D, Canon 10-22mm lens, Canon 50mm f1.4, Canon 100-400mm. That lens selection covers me for pretty much any scenario! I also nearly always take my tripod (Manfrotto compact action), my polarising filter and various spare cards and batteries!Feedback
Always make sure you have your camera prepped for the type of shot you want to take. You never know when an opportunity will appear! Keep your tripod handy for late shots like this, especially if you want to take multiple exposures. You'll also want some good waterproof boots if you're planning to hike through a soggy meadow for the perfect shot!
