Super tricky to photograph there overall. Sensor with wide dynamic range is a must. Underbrush is extremely dark and rays of light will blow out all the highlights.Equipment
E-510, leaned on a rock, too low for tripod of anykind. 35mm Zuiko macro lens at f4, no flash. And me holding a leaf behindInspiration
They were just sitting on top of a rotting branch like a bunch of gnomes and I could not resist.Editing
I use Lightroom. Brighten up a little and pool shadows out at bit. I tend to underexpose. Cropped to vertical. In my camera bag
I prefer to travel light: E-510 (seriously due for upgrade) with 12-60mm Zuiko or 35mm macro Zuiko - for general travel. Some destinations call for specific additions or substitutions. Backup body - iPhone.Feedback
Having at least somekind of water repellent/proofing on equipment is a must as it's humid and raining all the time. Dry season is just less wet. I had a water-proof bag to hide my camera in case i go overboard in one of the tiny dinghie we took around; however, I was ill-prepared for constant fog/drizzle on one location. I had to make a water proof bag from ducktape and shopping bag - saved my lens (not water resistant) from total ruin. You will need a flash in the rainforest even in the middle of the day to fight the highlights. For this shot: get low, mount your camera on something, give it some depth of field. Wait for a bug to crawl into shot if you that lucky. I wasn't.
