Location
In Montana between Kalispell and Missoula. Not sure where because my family was on a road trip coming home and I saw this composition off the road and pulled in. My wife gets angry at my distracted driving but sometimes it pays off.Time
Early morning. We were concerned the past two days because it was snowing hard and we had to drive 1200 miles this day and wasn't sure the roads were going to be clear but we got fantastic clouds the day we left.Lighting
The basic landscape rules apply shoot a few hours after sunrise to get softer light. Use the lowest ISO possible for the type of shot you want.Equipment
This shot was taken with a Nikon D750 paired with the Nikon 14-24mm f2.8 on a nice light duty but compact MePhoto tripod.Inspiration
The clouds and the nice leading lines in the photo. I had been watching the clouds but clouds alone don't make a photo. I saw the tracks running parallel to the road and I thought that would make a great composition but I needed those mountains way in the foreground before I pulled off the road. Honestly I was looking for the stream we passed a ways back but once I saw this composition I forgot all about the stream.Editing
Yes I use LightRoom to make minor clarity, exposure and crop corrections. Shooting Raw I always have some adjustments and other times a lot.I did brush the sky to drop the exposure slightly. In my camera bag
Nikon D750, Nikon 14-24mm F2.8, Nikon 50mm prime F1.4, Sigma 120-400mm f5.6, fotodiox Wonderpana filter system, lots of other filter like ND, polarizer and GND's, 3 batteries, 4 32GB Sandisk 95MB/s cards, two flash lights, head lamp, battery charger, cleaning kit, some type of candy, granola bars, Me Photo tripod, waterproof bag to cover my Lowpro backpack in case of rain and just for fun steel wool, and egg beater on a chain and a 9 volt battery. When I travel there is a back up Nikon D3200 and Tokina 11-16mm f2.8.Feedback
Just get your angles right and normally with tracks I tend to get a lower perspective. I find the best landscape shots have at least three areas that make a composition appealing to the eye. Foreground, mid ground and background. Be mindful of them all! I notice some photos have 1 or 2 but when you get all 3 it draws you into the photo. Try and capture a scene that someone would say I feel like I am there with you. Don't try and chase the perfect photo because there is no such thing but if you keep shooting as often as possible you will get great photos and grow. Have fun! Thanks for stopping by-
