Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken at Adelaide Zoo where they had three Orangutan - Kluet the male Sumatran, Puspa a female and this beautiful lady Karta who unfortunately has since passed away following child birth.

Time

Was taken in the morning around 11:30 am

Lighting

Lighting was a little difficult as Karta was behind the glass which had reflection from the light.

Equipment

Used my Nikon D3100 (have since upgraded to D7200) with the kit lens 55-300mm.

Inspiration

I love visiting the zoo and particularly the Orangutan as I came near the enclosure a young girl of about 2 was looking through the glass and Karta came right up close trying to reach out and touch the little one. It was such a beautiful moment however the little one was a little scared and ran off leaving space for me to quickly take the photo

Editing

Used very little post processing only adjusted the contrast and cropped.

In my camera bag

My Nikon D7200 is my main camera and I now have a Tamron 16-300 lens which I probably use 80% of the time as when walking around it can be used for birds, animals and still suitable for flowers. Usually have my wide angle Sigma lens, Tamron macro lens and 50mm prime in a second camera bag which is in the car and carry spare battery, polarising filters, and tripod. As I have some back issues I limit what I carry but try to park nearby so if I need to change lens I can return to vehicle to access.

Feedback

Be prepared to return to the animal enclosures several times during a visit to zoo as there is no guarantee they will be out of their night areas particularly if you arrive early in morning. If shooting through glass try to get as close as possible to avoid reflection.
