Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taking in a studio in Santa Clara, CA

Time

5pm

Lighting

Lighting was done with two 4'x1' gridded strip boxes low and behind the models at 45*.

Equipment

This was shot with a Canon 5DmkII and 24-70mm f/2.8L lens at 51mm. Lighting was Profoto strobes.

Inspiration

This was part of a larger project called Multiscapes which was inspired while walking in the Mesquite Dunes in Death Valley NP. I came to a series of dunes that looked like the curves of a woman's body and reminded me of some bodyscape shots I had done in the past. When I had the opportunity to do bodyscapes with 5 models I attempted to recreate the shapes of those sand dunes.

Editing

I retouched the skin to remove any blemishes, darkened the background to make it black, and converted to black and white using Nik Silver Effects Pro

In my camera bag

Canon 5DmkII, Canon 17-40mm F/4L, Canon 24-70mm f/2.8L, Canon 24-105mm f/4L, Canon 70-200mm f/2.8L, Canon 580 strobe, 4 pocket wizards, intervalometer, CamRanger, lots of memory cards, batteries, and business cards.

Feedback

Lighting on this type of image is key. Make sure the lights are relatively low, just slightly above the height of the models so that it rakes across the top of the models' bodies.
