Your photo and title reminds me one of Ibsen play, the Norvegean playwriter of 19th century. As in the drama of Ibsen The pillars of society, the power in his photo is looming, overwhelming. In the Ibsen's play, as in most of our comtemporary world, hypocrisy and lies are the elective system to get ahead and get public recognition, so that Bernick, the protagonist of this corrupt world, has become even console and an admired and respected person.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in Brussels at the Justice Palace/Law Courts, 'place Poelaert'.

Time

The picture was taken end of the day but before sunset.

Lighting

The reason for taking the picture end of the day was to make sure the light from outside wasn't too harsh but nevertheless sufficient to illuminate the inside of the building and the part of the ceiling which was not artificially lit.

Equipment

This was taken with my a99, a sigma 24-70mm @24mm and a Manfrotto tripod. No flash used.

Inspiration

The building is absolutely colossal (the largest building constructed in the 19th century!) and I wanted to try capture just how impressive it is without giving everything away. The angle was supposed to accentuate the immensity of the pillars while using the good old leading lines and rule of thirds (more or less, anyway).

Editing

Post processing was fairly limited. A little adjusting to the tone curve and slight reduction of the saturation. I also removed a little bit of unwanted pigeon feces from the net in the background...

In my camera bag

I always have my a99, a 24-70mm f2.8, an extra battery and my filters. I often bring along my favourite prime lenses: 50mm f1.4 and 15mm f2.8 fisheye. Whenever possible I drag along the tripod.
