Location
This photo was taken in Andrewsville, Ontario. Canada. Andrewsville is 45min. south of Ottawa, Ontario and 10 min away from my home in Merrickville, Ontario.Time
This image was taken early morning in winter at about 7:30 am as the sun was rising.Lighting
For this exposure I took my metering from the sun and took several shots using different ISO's and shutter speeds. I wanted this image to instantly convey mood, and tranquility. The lighting from the sun cutting through the thick fog and mist and also separated by the metal structure of the bridge created a magical glow and beams as if coming down from heaven all while lighting the roadway over the bridge.Equipment
This image was created using my Canon EOS 5D with a Canon EF 24-105 mm f/4L IS USM Lens. My camera was mounted on a Induro tripod with a RRS quick release plate. No flash was used for this image all natural light. Settings for this shot are f/5.6 @ 1/8000 sec. ISO 400, focal length 32mm Manual setting, with white balance set to daylight.Inspiration
My inspiration came from from some of the images I have viewed on the Viewbug site. I have always wanted to capture the sun burning through thick fog or mist at sunrise as the angle of the low sun can create beautiful sunbeams and sunrays through tree branches or in this case through the metal supports on the bridge. I drive over this bridge several times a week and on this morning everything fell into place for a magnificent image.Editing
For this image I slightly warmed up the tones. Most of my images are slightly adjusted for color and contrast, I also crop my images. On occasion I will bring up clarity a bit to bring out some detail when needed. I am a lightroom user and I develop my images as though I was in the darkroom again and prefer not to alter my images too much.In my camera bag
I always carry my trusty Canon EF 24-105 f/4L along with my Canon EOS 5D body. I also keep close by my EF 200mm f/2.8 mounted on my Canon 7D. When shooting landscapes I have my Induro tripod with me with RRS quick release plate.Feedback
Cold winter mornings can be a challenge for some. Keeping gear from freezing and or getting covered in snow, mist or rain can always be a problem. If I have any advice to share it would be this. Know your surroundings and visit the same places often as lighting, sunrises or sunsets are never the same and weather conditions can also change very quickly. Being prepared for the cold helps a great deal when setting up for a shot by knowing where to set tripod up or where to stand in certain light conditions can make things go much faster. For me, I try to have an image already processed in my head on what the final composition looks like.
