Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken in my family room. Since I took interest in photography about two years ago and it is now my favorite hobby, I'm still learning all the different options on my camera as well as in photography such as lighting, exposure etc. I was playing around with my camera, trying out different exposure and lenses and decided to use my dog as my point of interest. Mr. Dalton as we call him, is very obedient and in my favor cooperates very well when I take his picture.

Time

This picture was taken late afternoon in my family room which can be pretty dark. It was during the Christmas holiday and I was trying out the new lens I had received as a gift. Being very new at photography at that time, I was having difficulty finding the proper settings. I can do pretty much anything with Dalton and he will co operate. Therefore I was able to take my time and take a practice.

Lighting

I was looking for a picture that would be cute and that I would be able to use as a Christmas card. As the family room in my home can be rather dark with lots of shadows, that is when I decided to put the mini lights around him. It added more lighting which made it easier to take the picture.

Equipment

This shot was taken with a Nikon D3100, F-stop f/5.6, exposure time 1/8 second, ISO - 800 and no flash. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

I was practicing using my camera and people always love looking at pictures of animals. Since our Dalton listens very well I decided to use him for the picture. Being Christmas time and using a room with low lighting, I decided to add the lights around him. Dalton was getting tired and decided to lay down which made this picture even cuter.

Editing

When this picture was taken I was very new at photography and didn't know how to use Photoshop. I do take all my pictures in RAW and in this picture I used Photoshop to sharpen the image a little. That is the only thing that was done to this picture.

In my camera bag

I don't have a lot of equipment, but my camera bag usually has my Nikon D3100 body with my new AF-S Nikkor 35mm prime 1:1,8 G lens, and my used (new to me) AF-S Nikkor 55-200mm 1:4 - 5:6G lens.

Feedback

I am still so very new at photography and I have so much more to learn. I do lots of reading and follow certain workshops online whenever I can. I also recommend watching videos on different technics either on youtube or follow certain professional photographers who offer online videos. And of course, practice.
