Behind The Lens

Location

This photo is a montage of two photos. The landscape with fence and all was taken in Scotland with some lovely lighting coming through the clouds. Than I took the bike riders with some back lighting on them back in Malta.

Time

Both photos even due in different places, where taken in mid morning , both on a rainy days

Lighting

Lighting is natural, which I love to shoot with. There was no set ups just taking care of the direction of light and the interesting shadows .

Equipment

At that time both shots were taken with my { no longer now] Canon 300D and 75-300 zoom lens hand held. I love using long lenses

Inspiration

When I saw and took the landscape , I was pleased and loved it, but I thought it needs something else . I love to include people in my work. At that moment there was no one so I said I will include persons later on . The area seems fantastic for a mountain bike ride so back to Malta took the shoots of the riders. and placed them in the photo.

Editing

Yes I use photo shop. I changed photos to B&W and I use a lot the burning and dodging tools to get my B&W images as if I am still working in the darkroom. I used layers leaving the landscape as it is , but cut around the riders and placed them where I thought will be the right position.

In my camera bag

Now I go out with my Canon 6D , with the lens 24-105, zoom 100-400. . When I go to take long exposure shots I take the tripod plus triggers . Latest addition are ND filters to let me take long exposures .

Feedback

I shoot a lot of different subjects, getting people in the shot is better. Never throw any photo away as I explained above it can easily be added with other photo to create a story where otherwise will be just empty landscape of place. Go out and shot at different time of the day as even same place will look something else with different lighting
