Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at Langstone Harbour, i had ideally been looking for a sunset shot with the bridge in the background but it didn't quite fit my eye when i arrived so moved around abit until i found the right shot.

Time

I had just finished work so grabbed the camera and drove the 15 minutes to get there in the hope there would be something suitable that evening. I am not great at planning to be honest and fly by the seat of my pants as it were, i guess you could say i rely a little too heavily on luck, sometimes it pays off, sometimes not.........that day was a good day.

Lighting

The sky was key really, it was the main reason i headed there, it was the first sunset shoot i had done there so didn't really have any idea what to expect but the warm light reflecting of the pools of water and wet mud really help this image i think.

Equipment

I used a Canon 5d mkiii and a Zeiss Distagon 15mm lens on a Manfrotto tripod. The tripod gets me really low to the ground which was essential for this shot and the 15 mm lens which is just amazing allowed me to get really close and wide.

Inspiration

I was really going through a landscape phase in my photography and i still consider myself as someone who is very much learning his craft. I love dramatic photos and tend to lean towards this in my work and this suited that style.

Editing

This is actually a 7 shot hdr image which has been combined and taken into adobe camera raw and processed. I do a lot of my landscape work this way as it gives me a vast dynamic range to choose from which is very important for me.

In my camera bag

My bag will always have my Canon 5d mkiii in it and depending on what i am shooting will depend on how many lenses i put in, and of course how far i have to walk as they are not light and don't wan't to spend the night in hospital. If its landscapes then it will be my Zeiss Distagon 15mm, Canon 24-70 2.8 L, and just recently i have started to put my Canon 100-400 F4 mkii L in too as the optics are superb and it gives me that bit extra reach. I always carry my carbon fibre Manfrotto tripod with ball head. Plus i will carry a simple pano head and various nd filters and remotes.

Feedback

Keep practicing and trying lots of different angles is essential, you only have to move a small amount to improve the composition and the joy of digital is it doesn't matter how many you take, you can always delete them later. Better more than not enough. Depth of field is also very important, the closer you are to a subject the shallower the depth of field will be, so it may be a case of multiple exposures with different focal points and then blend them in photoshop to ensure you get everything in focus.
