Behind The Lens

Location

I took this picture at one of my favorite hiking areas. The Royal Botanical Gardens in Burlington and Hamilton. With its many forest trails and public gardens, it is a photographers dream. From scenic views, gardens, wildlife and bird migration

Time

After walking a trail and feeding the birds from our hands, we started heading back to the car about 1:00 in the afternoon.

Lighting

The lighting was harsh. We were parked next to this bed of tulips in a open parking lot. So the sun was right above our heads.

Equipment

I shot this picture with a Canon t2i rebel, with a Sigma 10-20mm 1.4-5.6 lens

Inspiration

The colour of the display is what caught my attention, so after taking a picture looking down on them and seeing everyone doing the same. I remembered seeing a picture once of shot flowers from the ground up so I thought I would give it a try. After 20 minutes and 20 pictures later I ended up with this shot.

Editing

No there was no post- processing. I liked the picture just the way it looked.

In my camera bag

Unless I know what I am going to take pictures of and select the right lens I want to use. I usually lug around a Think Tank backpack with just about everything I have. Canon t2i rebel, Sigma 10 -20 mm, Canon 75-300 mm, Canon 18-55 mm and a Tamron 90mm macro lens. Plus a 430ex11 speedlite, ND and graduated density filters, and a Velbon Sherpa 200r tripod. Plus water and snacks. Yes I know its a lot.

Feedback

Don't be afraid to try something. It took about 20 shots to get this picture, because the main problem was I could not see what I was shooting at. I set the shutter, f stop and focus, set up mirror lock up and timer and laid the camera on the dirt. After the picture was taken I viewed it to see for sharpness, exposure and composition. Made some adjustments and moved the camera left or right to get more of the tulips. To me time flew by, ask my wife and son they will probably say something else. One thing I try to do is see how people are taking pictures then find a point of view that they are not doing, to try and make something unique. Still have a long way to get there but the journey is worth it and fun
