This is a portrait of a friend of mine with his second child, a one week old new baby daughter. I took the photograph after following a Newborn Photography course on creativeLIVE (Julia Kelleher) and used the SilverEfexPro plug-in to turn it into black and white in Photoshop. The trick for me was to balance the B&W settings for the baby (soft, warm, not too contrasty) with the settings I used for the father (much harder settings, not too warm, more contrasty and toward the grunge side), and use layers to get them to flow seamlessly into each other so the final photograph looked like a single unit but each part of the photograph looked "right") as well.
