I took this photo on a Gulf Island in British Columbia, Canada. We take a family holiday there every year and take the dogs with us. I think the dogs enjoy this island as much as we do.Time
We usually eat breakfast and head to the beach in the morning and hike around on some of the island trails. Jonah, my golden retriever loves playing with his frisbee on the beach and he was really excited about playing fetch. Since I always carry my camera I started taking photos of him jumping up for the catch. The lighting was pretty good but I just wasn't getting a good picture. So, after going back to our cabin and eating lunch and a little rest for the dogs we walked back down to the beach. The lighting was not good for photography until about 4:45pm and then the sun seemed to bring out the beautiful blues and greens. After a few tries I finally got the shot I was looking for and we called it a day.Lighting
I am usually photographing outside and learning about how to use the sun as my lighting source.Equipment
I used my Nikon D5100.Inspiration
I am always taking pictures of my pets and add some landscape to the mix. Living in the Pacific Northwest is one of the most beautiful and diverse places to photograph so it is common for us to take off with the dogs for a day of fun with some photography added. So, I just did what comes naturally and grabbed my camera to see if I could capture Jonah jumping out of the water.Editing
I cropped the original photo and simply added a bit of saturation to the picture. In my camera bag
This is my first DSLR so I simply carry my Nikon D5100, Nikon 18-55mm, f3.5-5.6 lens, Nikon 55-300mm f4.5-5.6 lens, a 5in 1 reflector disc, an extra battery and SD cards in my LowePro 250 backpack.Feedback
Make sure that your camera is on a high shutter speed and there is plenty of light to support the high shutter speed you will need. Be prepared for sorting through multiple pictures before you find the one you love. But the most important advice is to realize the world will not end if you don't get the picture you were expecting. Go out and have fun.
