Behind The Lens

Location

I took this grizzly at Pavlov Harbor State Marine Park, South East Chicagof Island, in Alaska.

Time

Its about 2pm on 1 Sept 2012.

Lighting

The bear is on the shady part of river, with the extender 2x, the f/5.6 is not ideal for this agile hunting bear.

Equipment

Camera body Canon 60 D, Lens Canon EF 70 - 200 mm f/2.8L IS II USM plus Extender 2x III. No flash and no tripod.

Inspiration

One of my dream is to take the Grizzly in action, catching salmon. It show the speed and the dramatic action.

Editing

I only cropped and do some basic processing making it brighter and more contrast.

In my camera bag

I have Canon 5D Mark 3 body which I used mainly for Landscape, and Canon EF 70 - 200 mm f/2.8L IS II USM plus Extender 2x III, Canon EF 14mm f/2.8 L II USM and Canon EF 35 mm f/1.4L USM.

Feedback

I brought 2 bodies for this trip, Canon 5D Mark3 and my old Canon 60D which normally used by my wife. But the 5D burst mode is not fast enough and the 60D give extra length for the zoom than the full frame camera. I did not manage to use the Focus tracking feature on the 5D M3 which will be useful for this active brown bear.
