Location
I was shooting and directing a music video in the desert near Apple Valley, CA. One of the extras on the shoot was a model friend Anna Zarubina. After the video shoot was over she had brought a few army props and for about 15 minutes we shot in a nearby abandoned building. I happened to have my outdoor strobe setup so was able to control the light.Time
It was around sunset as our video shoot had just wrapped up.Lighting
I used one Alien Bee 800 power strobe with a large beauty dish off to the right about 90degrees. It had a its own battery pack.Equipment
Nikon D4 with a Nikkor 24-70 F/2.8 back then. (This photo was taken in 2014) Since 2016 I have been using the Sony A7Rii/A7Riii. With all Sony FE lenses. Alien Bee strobes. (Now I use Godox AD200 Pocket Flashes)Inspiration
I had shot many times with this model before and she needed very little direction as she always knows how to pose, how to play to the camera. She had driven hours from LA to be in my music video and we wanted to take advantage of the location.Editing
I alway post process all of my final images. Photoshop and sometimes Topaz Labs filters. They must be used lightly as its easy to overdo it! The Nikon D4 had great range of detail in lights and darks so bringing up the contrast and vibrance was sometimes all that was needed. My Nikon experience was D50, D300, D700, D4. And lastly the df. The df was lighter, and though having the same sensor as the D4, my df had more natural skin tones. Excellent color. In my camera bag
I usually shoot model shoots with a dual camera strap holding a A7Rii with a Sony 85 mm G Master or Sony 16-35 G Master, and a A7Riii with a Sony 24-70 G Master. (Both with a Godox Trigger unit on them) Extra memory cards, extra batteries. I carry 2 small light stands with Godox AD200 Pocket Flashes with extra batteries. One flash has a large folding beauty dish on it.Feedback
Mainly experiment with light placement. In my shot the light was off almost 90 degrees to camera right. If I had the light anywhere near the camera the shot would have had way less drama. I have the model play towards the light not the camera. The 24-70 lens is my most valuable lens when shooting full body poses. The 85mm cannot be beat for close ups, portraits.
