Behind The Lens

Location

Shipping is an important economic driver in my community, Duluth, MN, US. Duluth is a port city at the southwest coast of Lake Superior, the largest of The Great Lakes. Our twin city, Superior, WI, is also a port and sits a bit further east on Lake Superior. Duluth and Superior are known as the Twin Ports. The cold weather, light, and sea smoke were complimentary allowing me to capture this anchored ship in the background with Duluth's Leif Erickson Park in the foreground. My home is about 2 miles from this elevated spot, which is in a supermarket parking lot. I was driving by, saw the composition in my mind's eye, then drove home to get my camera.

Time

2011 Jan 8: Steaming Ship. Morning, about 10:00 AM, Lake Superior, Duluth, Minnesota, US. Ship anchored in lake awaiting dock space. Spooky low level sea smoke (fog) from extra cold temperatures, -(minus) 8F.

Lighting

The cold, sun, daylight, sea smoke (fog), and clouds made for a great opportunity and capture.

Equipment

Hand-held. Nikon NIKON D80 Lens AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6G IF-ED ISO 800 Focal Length 135.0 mm (202.0 mm in 35mm) Aperture f/14 Exposure Time 0.0004s (1/2500)

Inspiration

I enjoy sharing photos of objects, scenery, people, or events from my surroundings. It helps make my home seem like I'm on an exotic excursion. I want my photos to tell a story.

Editing

I looked at the original and altered he color a bit to make more mysterious and help the gazebo stand out.

In my camera bag

The lens I used as described above and a portrait lens.

Feedback

Don't forget your immediate surroundings. Look for unusual angles, lighting, design, lines, and whimsical shots. You'd be surprised how much you'll find and how much fun it is. Think how that photo gives you and the admirer a chance to really see.
