Behind The Lens

Location

Rocky Gorge Scenic Area on the Swift River in Albany, NH

Time

Early on an overcast morning, about an hour after sunrise.

Lighting

On this particular day it was overcast with scattered showers. The nice even light was perfect for photographing waterfalls.

Equipment

For this shot I used a Canon 40D and Canon EF17-40 F4 lens. To cut the glare on the wet rocks and boost the saturation in the fall foliage I used a B+W circular polarizer. As always the camera was securely mounted on my Gitzo carbon fiber tripod.

Inspiration

This waterfall has been a favorite subject of mine for a while. With the overcast and fall foliage I knew this would be one of the stops I'd make while exploring the NH White Mountains.

Editing

Yes this photo has seen some post processing. First I correct or adjust white balance, lens correction, as well as a slight boost in saturation. Then it's off the Nik Color Efex Pro 4

In my camera bag

Currently I'm shooting with the 5D MkIII and my lenses of choice for landscapes is either the 17-40 F4 L or the 70-200 F2.8 L IS MkII. There's also a selection of filters, at least two spare batteries, as well as a remote shutter release.

Feedback

For a waterfall shot like this you couldn't ask for better weather than an overcast and rainy day. The even light makes getting a good exposure a piece of cake. For a day of waterfall photography my circular polarizer goes on and stays on the whole day. The CPL is the one filter every landscape photographer shouldn't be without. Use it to remove unwanted glare and reflections, in addition the CPL will block 1-1.5 stops of light, a big help when it comes to achieving longer exposure times for that silky look on the water.
