Behind The Lens

Location

In our own yard. I think I have documented just about every inch of grass, every flower petal and every tree branch there, in every possible season and weather.

Time

Early evening, late afternoon. It had been raining hard, and I had been waiting for it to stop.

Lighting

It had been raining, but the sun was breaking through the clouds now and again. I prefer natural light and am always looking for it to fall just right for a certain subject or scene, muted or clear, strong or hazy.

Equipment

I have an old, second-hand Sony A300 DLSR, given to me as a birthday present. I shoot a lot with it. This picture is hand-held. It was probably just the kit lens zoom in this case.

Inspiration

There were at least fifty bees buzzing around the stands of Devil's Helmet or Monkshood and I had a certain picture in mind, so I kept trying to get it. Ended up with quite a few good photos (and lots of rejects), but I chose this one for sharing because I like the droplets of water on the bee and the way the movement of its wings make them seem like a propeller.

Editing

I rarely do a lot of post-processing, and for this one I did nothing, I did not even have to crop it.

In my camera bag

My Sony A300, my favourite lens, the 75-300mm zoom, some close-up filters, sometimes a compact camera for quick snaps and at times a monopod or tripod, but usually I prefer to hand-held shooting, if at all possible.

Feedback

Patience! A certain picture in your mind of what you want to capture helps, of course, but you might catch something surprising that you did not expect at all. The most important thing, however is - have fun! Enjoy the experience, listen to the sounds, drink in the smells and take pleasure in the creative activity.
