Location
Taken from municipal beach at Frankfort, Mi harbor. There is a lighthouse on one side of the harbor and the South side has this Pier light.Time
Taken in the afternoon of March 17th, 2014. Was late in the winter and ice had been forming on the light all winter long from storms coming across Lake Michigan.Lighting
Natural lighting from diffused sun light. One of the few days that week with any sun... typically pretty overcast.Equipment
Canon EOS 7D with a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens set at F/110 and with a shutter speed of 1/640 sec. Camera was mounted on a tripod set on an icy mound on the beach.Inspiration
Because of the piers location on the East Shore of Lake Michigan, the winter storm pound this area on a pretty regular basis. Ice will usually start to form in December and build up over the length of the winter. Sometime it is hard to even see the structure for all the ice, but in this instance, it was nice to see portions of the pier light exposed.Editing
Lightroom 5 was used for processing the image. Pretty typical processing with normal tweaks to a RAW image. In my camera bag
The Canon 7D is my primary camera and most of my photograph involves either using this 70-200 lens or a Sigma 10-20mm wide angle. The one other lens I use a lot if a Sigma 180mm macro. Most of my photography is nature & landscape, but I am doing more portrait work and use a Sigma 85mm f/1.4 lens for this work.Feedback
Hard bright sunlight is not the best time to shoot ice forms. It is easier to capture some of the interesting detail & color of ice forms with more diffused sunlight or even overcast conditions.
