Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the hillside above Hebden Bridge in West Yorkshire. UK. Its only about half a kilometre from my door and I have taken several photos of this particular tree in different light and at different times of the year.

Time

It was shot in early evening in winter when the light is at its best for photographers and the shadows are not too harsh.

Lighting

The lighting is natural early evening light.

Equipment

I used my trusted Pentax K5 for this shot with a Tamron 17-50 mm lens. I always use a tripod for landscapes and a cable release to avoid any camera shake.

Inspiration

I often see this particular tree when I go out walking and I wanted to take a shot of it in the snow when the ground was covered to give it more prominence. I particularly like the shape of the crown which is shaped by the prevailing winds.

Editing

I shot this in RAW which is a more versatile format for post processing. It enables the photographer to easily change the white balance, temperature, and clarity etc. This particular shot was taken in colour and converted to mono in Adobe Photoshop. I added a subtle pink colour to emphasise the evening light on the snow and in the sky.

In my camera bag

I have a Lowepro camera backpack which I use regularly as go walking over the moors a lot. In it I carry my Pentax K5, a Tamron 15-70 lens, A Sigma 10-20 wide angle lens and a Tamron 70-200 zoom. I always carry a tripod and cable release to shoot when the light is low and often use Cokin ND grad filters for a better exposure of sky and land.

Feedback

In this particular shot I used the dry-stone wall as a lead in line to draw the viewer to the main focal point of the tree. I planned for this shot to be in mono but shot in colour to give me more scope to get more tone during post processing. When the light is low as in this early evening winter shot, its always good practice to use a sturdy tripod and a cable release or self-timer to avoid any camera shake. I could have bumped up the ISO and hand held the camera but this often produces some degree of noise and I wanted a good clean picture.
