Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo of the New Holland Honeyeater while it was sitting on my backyard fence. It was taken through my family room window and I spent ages trying to get some decent shots of this beautiful bird with its striking yellow feathers. It is a regular visitor to my garden during the summer and autumn months in Australia (December through to March) and enjoys the nectar from the flowering bushes.

Time

This bird usually has two visiting times of the day - one around 7.30 am - 9.30 am and the second visiting time is around 3.30 - 5.30pm. This shot was taken during the second visiting session.

Lighting

No specific lighting was used, just the natural early evening light through the window.

Equipment

No equipment was used for this photo nor did I use any specific lens - just the kit lens that comes with my Canon Powershot. It was hand-held.

Inspiration

After mastering photos of flowers, I wanted to move on to something more challenging and bird photography was next on my list of challenges. What better way than to commence photographing birds that pay you a visit every day.

Editing

No post-processing was done for this photo. At the time I took this photo I had no idea of any type of post-processing. I still have not mastered any editing skills and now mainly use the basic Windows 10 editing tools to enhance my photos.

In my camera bag

My Canon Powershot SX50HS and a Canon Speedlite 430EX II (which I use only when required). I am still a learner and have a long way to go to master the technical aspects of photography.

Feedback

Practice makes perfect. You-tube videos are very informative. I also found that joining various photography groups helps to increase one's knowledge. Two of the groups I belong to organise regular excursions (both free and paid excursions) which are excellent for learning and sharing knowledge.
