Location
This photo was taken in my home living room, just before I moved into a professional studio.Time
This shoot happened on a Saturday afternoon, as do most of my creative shoots.Lighting
I had bought a new large beauty dish that I was eager to try out for the first time. To prevent spill in my small space (living room), I used a grid which also caused deep shadows. I then added a small silver reflector just low enough to be out of frame to fill in the shadows, creating a clamshell type lighting setup.Equipment
For this shoot, I used my trusty Canon 5D Mark II with a Canon 70-200 f2.8 lens, mounted to a tripod. Since I don't use a light meter, I tether to my laptop using Capture One to check my exposure and make adjustments as I shoot.Inspiration
My hairstylist (who styles most of my fashion and beauty shoots), wanted to utilize this pink wig she had just created, so we found the perfect model and makeup artist to finalize the look, and spent the afternoon experimenting and having fun.Editing
All of the post-processing was done by me. Since this is a beauty photo, I wanted everything to look polished. To do this, I spent about 2 hours cleaning up the skin (cloning, healing brush, dodging & burning), and enhancing colors.In my camera bag
I'm in no way a gear hog, quite the opposite actually. In my bag I tend to carry one camera body (Canon 5D Mark II), a Canon 70-200 f/2.8 (which I used 90% of the time), a Canon 24-104 f/4 (which I used the other 10% of the time, and a Canon 50 f/1.4, (which I never use). I also bring a pocket full of spare batteries just in case.Feedback
The best advice I can give for achieving this look is to experiment and have fun. Using the modelling lamp will better help you with seeing the direction of light and light fall-off. Have fun!
