Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken right as my love for photography had begun. When I lived in Norway the autumns were very beautiful and I was lucky enough to have a large backyard with lots of trees. Taking photos of nearly everything I saw at the time, this piece was one of my favorites from my backyard experiments.

Time

This would have been right before sunset after school as I spent some time outside with my dog, taking in the last of the seasons warmth before the chilling winter winds blew away all the leaves.

Lighting

During Autumn and winter the days are very short in Norway so the light is always low and offering beautiful (perfect in my opinion) light for photography.

Equipment

Taken using my first DSLR - Nikon D3100 with its stock lens and nothing more.

Inspiration

At a time where I had just started to discover the art of photography I was taking photos of everything that caught my eye. Experimenting with the diversity of my backyard and my love of nature the Autumn leaves had always been beautiful to me. A tree glistened with a rainbow array of colours and inspired me to use its leaves in different arrangements to build shapes, colours compliments and styles. Seeking the perfect background for my little leaf photoshoot, I realized my square outdoor tiles provided the perfect contrast and texture. Having always had a scientific mind, it fascinated me how the leaves would change their colours and I love to freeze frame anything fascinating.

Editing

In my opinion I may have over processed this photo. At a time where I was just learning to use post processing tools I only did the simplest of touch ups but I tended to go a little overboard. But this extra use of colour and light corrections along with a dark Vignette border has added mood and extra colour pop to the photo.

In my camera bag

Since my main subject is nature or the spare of the moment shot I like to carry my bag as light as possible as well as keep my photos as natural as they can. So my bag generally consist just of just one of my cameras itself and the lenses currently mounted on. This allows for quick readiness for photos of wildlife when out and on the move or keeps landscapes photos natural as the eye captures the real thing.

Feedback

Always think of your symmetric, photo rules you want to follow (or break), and always use natural lights to you advantage. In a still shot such as this, it is important to think of the placement of your objects and the synergy between shapes and textures. Go with your gut. If something looks good, capture it as you see it, focus on what you find appealing about what you are seeing, is it the leaves themselves, the combinations of them together, the textures they hold or just simply capturing nature doing what it does best.
