I live in a small village in the Dutch polder landscape. Often, before going to work, I take my camera and search for some nice spots to take photos. In the autumn (and also spring) there are some warm days and cool nights. When that happens one will know that there will be ground mist in the polder. This is particularly very beautiful with a sunrise as you can see here.

Behind The Lens

Location

This photo is taken in the polder near the village of Nieuwerbrug aan de Rijn in The Netherlands.. It is also within a few hundred meters of the highway between Rotterdam and Utrecht.

Time

It was at 8 o'clock in the morning.

Lighting

I like to take photos directly towards the sun. Somethings it results in suprising effects. This specific photo was possible because of the thick fog which nicely diffused the light. That did not make the sun light to strong and with a small aperture it worked out well.

Equipment

A Manfrotto CX190 carbon fiber tripod with Manfrotto 496R ball head. My camera is a Canon 5D Mark 2. I used my Canon 17-40mm F/4 USM lens. And a cable remote.

Inspiration

In the months before I took this photo I frequently drove the highway for my work always at time of sunrise. Early in the morning, especially when nights are getting colder at the end of the summer, there is ground fog in the Dutch polder landscape. With a sunrise like this one it is very beautiful to watch and I really enjoy driving car during these moments. That is why I decided one morning to also pack my photo gear when heading to work and make a detour to make some photos first.

Editing

I did some minor changes in Lightroom 5 which I use to import my photos. Things like highlight and shadow correction and levelling. I also used Macphun Intensify to create more detail and contrast in the grass in the foreground.

In my camera bag

I have to kinds of photo bags. One for long days where I go out in the morning (or away for a photo weekend) and do not know specifically where I will go or what the subject will be. This is a large backpack with all kinds of equipment. The lenses I take on those days are Canon 17-40mm F/4 USM, Canon 24-105mm F/4 IS USM, Tokina ATX-PRO 100mm macro and the Sigma 150-500mm F/5-6.3 HSM. I also take my two cameras with me; the Canon 5D and Canon 5D Mark 2. Some UV and Polaroid filters, my tripod, cable release and 430EX flash unit. For macro shots of flowers I also take a small reflector screen. My newest equipment is the 10 stopper from Format-Hitech to do long exposures. The other kind of bag is a small day pack for more specific type of photography. It fits one camera, two lenses and a flash unit or other small stuff.

Feedback

Before I took this photo I almost exactly knew where I had to be. First I did a global check when I drove by over the highway almost every day. When I had a rough idea where I wanted to be I looked at Google Maps with normal and satellite view. I researched where there are roads, water, trees, bridges and farms. Next I researched in which direction the sun would rise. I do this with a software program called The Photographer's Ephimeris. It can show you exactly for every place on earth at every time where the sun and moon rise and set. When I know the exact place I check the weather reports a few days ahead. I took this photo with my Canon 5D mark 2 and 17-40mm lens mounted on a tripod. I set it to mirror lockup and used a cable release. I set my camera to aperture priority and set F/16. Mainly because I wanted a large DOF but also because the sun was already above the horizon and the light was quite strong already. I took a few photos with and check my histogram carefully..
