Location
This photograph was taken from the 25th floor of the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Vancouver, British Columbia on Valentine's Day. The view was great and the fog that came in added to the scene.Time
2:00 am. This is a great time at night when the traffic is low enough to generate a few light lines from the cars without drawing too much attention to them.Lighting
I had taken some night shots like this before and I always made the mistake of having the ISO in Auto. I have now moved my ISO setting to manual (100 in this case) to get a lot less noise on these type of images.Equipment
I used my Canon 70D and my EF-S10-18mm f4.6-5.6 IS STM lens. Shot at 10mm for 6.0 sec at f4.5, ISO 100Inspiration
The fog and the play of lights reflecting on it is what drew my attention to it. Not sure what caused the purple light on the fog but I know the blue hue is from a neon sign on one of the buildings on the left.Editing
The only post-processing I did was to merge two shots that I took within a minute since one had the purple light and the other had better streaks on the streets from a passing car. Some minor cropping and a slight adjustment with curves to punch the black. In my camera bag
In my bag I have two zoom lenses 10-18 and 18-135, one 60mm macro lens and an old 70-210. Always carry my tripod, a flash, extra charged batteries and an extra set of memory cards no matter what. Carrying the extra memory cards saved my bacon this time as in the morning I had created an image for my wife for Valentine's Day (https://500px.com/photo/98985555/valentine's-day-2015-by-xavier-wiechers?from=user_library) and in the rush of preparing things I left the card on my computer. I could have carried all my gear and not be able to take any pictures.Feedback
Use as low an ISO as you can get away with. Use a remote to trigger your shot or use your 10s timer (not the 2s one) since I find that there are still minor vibrations on the 2s one (sometimes from the strap balancing etc). Keep your camera on Full Manual. I have been forcing myself to do that on every single shot to force me to always look at all my settings; from ISO, to speed, to aperture etc. When you have some automatic we tend to get lazy and not think about what will generate the best shot
