Beautiful shot! I visit Lake Crescent several times each summer and have never heard of Leland Lake. I will have to go there.

Leland is at it's best when the weather is lousy. Not much of that in the summer. My favorites from Leland are mostly from December thru February. This image was captured on Valentines Day in 2015.

Behind The Lens

Location

This image was captured at Lake Leland in Washington State. The lake itself is just outside the Olympic National Park. But some of the Olympic Mountain range is visible.

Time

Leland is almost always cloudy / foggy in the morning in the winter months. This was taken on Valentine's Day 2015 at 8:01 am. which was 34 minutes after sunrise.

Lighting

The fog was leaving fast the morning I got this. Some morning it can gradually lift over the course of a couple hours. What made this shot different was the way the highest mountain illuminated before the lower fog had totally lifted. Never saw that before and I have not seen it since.

Equipment

I used a full sensor Nikon D610 with a 24-85 Nikkor lens. The image was captured at 1/4 of a second, so a bogen tripod was used.

Inspiration

The reflection at Lake Leland is usually calm and foggy in the winter when it's between storms that come off the Pacific Ocean. The storms mean snow for the higher elevations.In November thru February I try to get there at least once a week. It's very easy to get expired there.

Editing

This image was captured in RAW and developed in Adobe Lightroom. Another amazing thing about this image is it took very little work in post processing. Not even any cropping. Image is 6016 x 4016

In my camera bag

Nikon D610 is always in the bag! And usually backed by my Nikon D5200. The D5200 almost always has the Nikkor 24-85 mounted. The FX lens on the DX body really works well! And the D610 has a Nikkor 18-35. Both wide lenses have circular polarizers. Also on the bag is a Nikkor 85 f4 macro. And a Nikkor 70-300 G (FX) telephoto. Also carry my Bogen monopod and tripod everywhere.

Feedback

If you go to Lake Leland in the summer you won't find anything like this.You'll find a little ol trout lake. The Olympic Peninsula snow melts fast. A lot of the streams are way down by April. As a rule of thumb, the nastier the weather, the better this lake looks. As long as it's not storming. which kills the reflection. Be prepared to be at a lake like this about 30 minutes before sunrise. At a lake like this in the winter. The mornings are like fingerprints. Each is a little different and you never know when the shot of the morning will happen. I've seen this lake go from thick as pea soup and 15 minutes later be clear as mothers milk! Other mornings in never does clear. As for the reflection, this lake generally looses reflections at 7mph. Depending on wind direction. As for the trout .... YUM!!!
