Location
This photo was taken in a studio in Lawrence, Massachusetts.Time
It was an evening shoot so lighting the model could be controlled.Lighting
A single light with a large soft box did the trick for this. No backlighting to create contrast. Kept it very simple.Equipment
Alien Bee 800 was my lighting of choice with a large softbox. Nikon 3200, 55mm/1.8. I have since moved on to a Nikon 610 full-frame camera, I felt very constrained with the the cropped sensor in the Nikon 3200.Inspiration
My inspiration for this photo was simple, ballerina's make good subjects.Editing
This photo was some of my early work, I had limited post-processing skills. There are many other things I might do to this photo today. My decision for black and white was simple, contrast. In my camera bag
What don't I have, I'm a gear junky now, and its no longer a bag, its "bags". Nikon 610 FX, 70-200mm/2.8, 24-70mm/2.8, 35mm/50mm/85mm/1.8, 1.7x tele-converter, Sigma wide-angle lens. How about a Sekonic 657 Light Meter, a Lightening Bug trigger, Pocket Wizards x 4, its a lot.Feedback
For this shot and any shot where contrast is the objective, keep it simple. One light, whether a big soft box or strip/grid, shoot ISO 100/200, between F8-F13. Even if you screw up the lighting, Lightroom will save you.
