Now this I really like...A wonderful eye catching edit.
With minimal colour, this works much better than other work in the genre of similar pieces (In my opinion).
Well done and congrats.....Brian

Behind The Lens

Location

I took this in my living room, right next to my dining room table. I was feeling creative so I just took out all my gear where I had left it.

Time

This was taken the morning after I got off my first 7 day, 12 hour shift at my new job. I was bagged, exhausted, zombie-like... and yet, all I wanted to do was take a self portrait. It was taken February 13th, 2015.

Lighting

My living room is pretty dim with little natural light, so I did bounce a flash to light up my features.

Equipment

My camera is a Nikon D7100. I recently made the switch to Nikon from Canon, so the flash I used was a Canon Speedlite 320EX. I shot with a Nikon 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6 VR lens at 35mm. I had at it 1/250 of a second with an F stop of 11.

Inspiration

There was another photography I follow on Viewbug who's doing a 365 day self portrait challenge. Anyway, as I was watching her progress, I decided it'd be about the right time to challenge myself to taking a newer self portrait, and to do it differently than I'd ever done one before.

Editing

I did! In photoshop, the first thing I did was retouch via frequency separation. Next, I burned and dodged my eyes to make them pop. Then I had to separate myself from the background (my living room is purple!), so I used the quick selection tool to do that. The trees and the birds were just layer masks and brushes, and the final tone of the image was an adjustment layer.

In my camera bag

I keep all my equipment in my bag, and it's not very much equipment. I have my body, then my Nikon 18-105mm f/3.5-5.6 VR, Nikon 35mm f/1.8G AF-S DX Lens, some filters, a cleaning kit, my Speedlite 320EX, and finally just a bunch of spare batteries and memory cards. I usually carry my tripod by hand.

Feedback

Patience! When I was setting up to take my self portrait, I was running back and forth from my camera to quickly pose and then back to my camera. It took a good hour or two before I finally got the shot. In post processing, I'd only suggest not being afraid to try something new. This was a new style for me, and it was my first time doing it, and from this portrait I've gained new skills that can only improve my photography and post processing.
