I took this at the zoo in St. Louis, Mo. My brother and his family had come up from out of state to spend Memorial Weekend with us so we decided to go see the animals. Update: Sept. 2015 I just heard on the news that this fellow passed away from heart problems.Time
It was afternoon between 3:00 and 3:30 pm by the time we got to the Gorilla area.Lighting
It was a cloudy day so it was good for getting photos with no harsh shadows. Other than that it was just natural outdoor light which I love using.Equipment
I shot this using a Canon Rebel XSi. F stop was set at F5, ISO-800, at 1/250 sec. The focal length was set at 225 mmInspiration
He was in the outdoor area just sitting there looking so sad. He just happened to look up at me so I zoomed in through the fence and took a series of burst shots and thought this one was the best.Editing
I didn't really have to do a lot but I adjusted the levels and contrast just a bit and converted it to black and white. In my camera bag
Actually I don't really have a lot in my bag. My 18-270mm lens, the standard 55mm lens and a few lenses for macro shots which I haven't tried yet. I like to go light and I do pretty well with just those.Feedback
Taking photos in zoos are always a challenge because you have to get past the fences. But it can be done as you can see. You have to be patient and be ready when the moment comes. Taking lots of photos to get a few good ones seems to always be the way it goes.
