Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken in the Sierra Nevada Mountains of California in the Carson Pass area. This little lake is a hidden gem that most people drive on by after seeing other lakes along the highway on the way to Lake Tahoe.

Time

Afternoon light was captured in late fall on the lake. The reason I took the photograph during this time was so that the autumn colors were in the area as well as the stronger afternoon warm light on the island and trees. This gave me the reflective leading line I was looking for, and with the time of year, the granite wall in the background remained unlit.

Lighting

The lighting of the photograph was the key element since the warmth of the late afternoon light on the tree was the catch. This gave the photograph a mystical feeling.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D90 with an 18-105mm lens at 70mm to minimize compression of the scene. Tripod mounted with only ambient light.

Inspiration

I have been visiting this area since I was a small boy, and this was inspired by my father who not only taught me the beauty of the great outdoors, but also asked me "Do you have your camera?" any time we were hiking.

Editing

Since I shoot raw format all my landscapes have a small amount of post processing. However my main goal is always to make the photograph convey the feeling of what I saw at the time of making the exposure. I always have the scene in my mind and try to get the capture to realistically convey what my eye saw at the time.

In my camera bag

I always carry 2 bodies (D610 and D7000 at this time), a wide angle zoom (10-24mm), mid range zoom (24-105mm), telephoto zoom (70-300mm) as well as fixed 17mm, 55mm macro, and 105mm. Never without my tripod and also my Hoodman so I can double check focus on each exposure. Polarizer and two neutral density filters (variable 8 stop and fixed 10 stop) are always close by.

Feedback

Never rush your shot. If it is a scene that you know well make sure that you understand when the light and time of year will be right. Stop in time to time to check it. I waited 2 years for this particular time and color to be there.
