Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a fellow photogs garage one evening. We sort of pieced things together with a black cloth, work bench to hold the fish tank steady and a ton of fruits were used!

Time

A few of us wanted to test some speed lighting and just said hey meet here let's do this! We worked all night up until 1am in the morning trying to figure out the best combination of lights, camera and action.

Lighting

Two bare bulb white lightnings were positioned at both ends of the tank about 2 feet away, I wanted the bubbles and fruit to be very sharp once in the water so I had to freeze motion the best I could.

Equipment

Other than the two white lightnings for a light source my NIKON D5000 was mounted on a tripod using a 50mm prime lens to avoid extra camera shake once the shutter went off. Also to avoid more shake once everything was in place a shutter release remote was used on the count of 3.

Inspiration

It all happened very unexpectedly. We'd be seeing on social media photographs like this come up and decided hey lets give that a shot. We tried a ton of different items. Fruits, vegetables and jolly ranchers. The jolly ranchers didn't last too long because they started to melt in the water which became a sticky situation.

Editing

The goal was sharpness! I did clean up some on the bubbles and whatever I deemed unnecessary. Isolating the lemon and lime and using smart sharpen a bit really help the pores in the fruit come out and show their character. Other than that the original photograph came out near perfect from camera.

In my camera bag

In my bag of tricks is my trusty NIKON D5000 which is an average level camera but gets the job done. A 50mm prime lens which was used on this photo to help with sharpness and depth of field to blur anything in the background. Always keep my NIKKOR 55-300mm lens handy just in case. It has the best glass and not to mention the focal length comes in handy. Other equipment I carry is a Sigma wide angle 18-50mm, a cheap wal-mart shutter release remote, some lens filters, batteries, 2 Bower external flashes, Soldier wireless trigger system for a lite load and Fotodiox strobes(3) with a Paul C Buff lithium battery pack mini for out door locations.

Feedback

Yes, if you have an idea just do it. The difference in you and other people is the energy to get up and do things. Go full throttle, work things out as you go, it could be fun. The reward in the end is worth it.
