I took this photo inside the hatch of a 300ZX with the camera set on a tripod, 2 second timer, ISO 100, and had the shutter set to stay open for 2 seconds.Time
This was taken in the evening around 8pmLighting
While taking this shot, I tried to time it so that I would be going under a streetlight when the shutter was open to help illuminate the inside of the car.Equipment
For this shot, I used an Induro AT214 tripod with an Induro BHL2 ball head, a Nikon D7100, and a Tamron 10-24mm lens. No flash or filters were used for this picture.Inspiration
I actually hadn't even planned to shoot a shot like this when I left that evening. I didn't find anything of interest to shoot at my original location, but I decided I didn't want to go home without shooting something. Since it was getting dark, I started thinking about different locations that would give some interesting light trails. Then the idea hit me to set up the tripod in the back of the Z and take some long exposures driving down the road. I've taken plenty of long exposure shots before but never anything like this. I knew the most difficult part of the shot was going to be me staying as still as possible for 2 seconds. Fortunately, I knew where a nice smooth stretch of straight road was and headed there. And the rest is well.... In the photograph!Editing
Having T-Tops on the Z allowed for plenty of light to get inside the car. This is a single exposure with very minimal post processing done. It was shot in RAW and once imported, just a few tweaks in the Basic's section in Lightroom was all that was needed.In my camera bag

For this shot to really work, I needed to ensure that the camera was perfectly lined up both vertically, horizontally, and dead center inside the car. Setting up the shot was the most time consuming aspect and required a great deal of patience. Another thing is to make sure there aren't any other cars in front of you heading in the same direction. If you are going roughly the same speed, the car will show up almost looking parked on the road and become a distraction for your picture. A straight stretch of road with plenty of lights works best. Also, if you are trying to turn while the shutter is open, there's no way to be still and you will be blurred in the picture causing another distraction. Last but not least, a little luck always helps too!
