A brilliant wildlife capture, love it

Behind The Lens

The photo was taken whilst on holiday in Sabah, Borneo. I'd wanted to go there to visit the Orangutans and see for myself the trouble they're in due to loss of habitat. I was astounded to see a huge variety of amazing wildlife species, sadly all facing similar problems.
The photo was taken around midday - being on tour you're a little at the mercy of who is driving you where. when!
Luckly is was a fairly overcast day. As much as I love the sun when photographing for highlights and shadows, and overcast day bring nice even light, making choosing light reading settings alot easier, thus being able to concentrate more on the animals movements.
Camera was a Canon Eos 50D with a 18-200mm lens which is all I carry when travelling (plus the iphone of course!)
Photographing animals can always be a challenge. Spending time just watching I find helps me to pick the right moments. I'm of the old school (remember film cameras?) where each shoot mattered. I still stick with those principals today, even in the endless digital world.
I'm not a big fan of post-processing - probably because I'm not that patient on the computer! I have fiddled a little in Photoshop with this one. I'd prefer my photos to be what I see is what you see, but sometimes things need to be sharpened, or backgrounds modified, etc.
In my camera bag
Nowadays its a Fujifilm XT-1 with 18-135mm lens (plus the Iphone). 'KISS' is my motto. (keep it simple stupid!)
Photograph what you're passionate about - for me its animals and nature. And it shows, I take lousy studio shots, mediocre landscapes, and boring still life photos. I enjoy being out in nature, always on the lookout for little critters and interesting plants. And have endless patience with animals, just because I love watching them.
