Behind The Lens

The photo of Bob was taken at my local camera club. My beauty dish had just arrived so I took it along to test out while setting the studio heads up. This way it gave everyone at the club a chance see the difference between the normal soft boxes that we use.
It was taken between 7pm-9pm on a Friday night.
I used a beauty dish at the front of the subject and a softbox to the side. The beauty dish is a sliver rather than white as I really like the contrast it gives, but just to tone it down placed a cap over the front. Pretty much a straight lighting setup other than that.
2 x Elinchrom 400 d-lite heads, one with a beauty dish and the other used a softbox. Panasonic GH3 body & Lumix G Vario 14-45mm f/3.5-5.6 lens.
There were two things that inspired this shoot, one was a an old rather worn book that I managed to buy from the princely sum of 50p and the other was Bob’s outfit that he had started putting together.
The background I shot some time before, there are loads of forests and wooden areas where I live so it’s an easy background to find and shoot. I cut Bob out from the black backdrop and blended it the forest image. The colour was mostly from an adjustment layer, colour lookup using the Smokey option in device link.
In my camera bag
Shooting micro four thirds means you can fit a lot into a small-ish bag but still have a lot of choices at hand. I will take different equipment depending if I’m shooting landscapes or people, but as a rule I take my GH3 a 14-140mm, 100-300mm, 14-45mm, 45mm macro and a 7.5mm fish eye. This covers me for just about anything I need. For landscapes I’d grab my grads, a 10 stopper and a wireless remote, my main 3 lenses have screw in polarisers on all the time (I find this quicker than adding them to lenses whist out and about). If I’m shooting people speedlights, a battery pack and triggers are added to the bag.
Take time over cutting out, it’s worth it in the long run. Think about the image, does it tell a story or make you think, images that do are more interesting and try to keep it simple, don't over complicate it.
