Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was shot in my home studio. I have a three-car garage converted into a studio. I have photographed everything form boudoir to custom motorcycles comfortably in it.

Time

Photographed on a relaxing Saturday afternoon.

Lighting

I wanted something powerful and sexy. The strip light was placed camera left. Blowing light off her hair on onto the backdrop and to the white wall camera right. The reflection off of the wall highlights her face.

Equipment

Shot with a Nikon D3S with an 80-200, 2.8 lens. I used an Alien Bee 400 with a Paul C. Buff strip box on a Kupu C stand.

Inspiration

This young woman recently had her second child and was starting a new job. She is a confident and powerful single mom. Audrey wanted something fun and different to mark the start of a new beginning. Audrey arrived at my studio with tons of clothes and ideas and her mother for support. We ended up doing three clothing changes and this shot was from the last change. Audrey's confidance grew with every outfit she tried on. So by the third change up we had the real Audrey in front of the camera. (side note) Her mom had a blast hanging out and snapping photos with her phone. When she used her flash from the phone it would trigger my flashes, so she ended up with some really nice shots, haha.

Editing

I typically edit my glamour type photos in Photoshop. Using the Spot healing brush, do some Frequency Separation then a little Dodge and Burn for effect. I used Nik for the B&W conversion.

In my camera bag

My everyday bag is a Tenba messenger bag. Carrying a Nikon D3S attached to a 24-70mm 2.8, 80-200mm 2.8, Nikon SB900, Two Yongnuo flash triggers, spare batteries for flash and camera and a small reflector. It is tight but it all fits. I have a Tamrac Pro9 that I travel with. It holds all the listed equipment plus another camera body and 85mm 1.4 and 16-35mm 3.5 lenses along with another flash and lot of miscellaneous... I love both these bags.

Feedback

I really enjoy studying the lighting of fashion photographers. Some of my favorites are Herb Ritts, Ellen Von Unwerth, Peter Lindbergh, Mario Testino, William Coupon and the list goes on... Find the photographers that inspire you. Try and de-construct the lighting, then go out and play. That has been my way of learning and continued insperation.
