Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on the dock of an old warehouse near the Mississippi River in St. Louis.

Time

I took this photo around 13:00.

Lighting

I lit Dal with a hard light from a gridded 400ws strobe, i intentionally underexposed to background to make her pop out from her surroundings.

Equipment

I made this photo with a Nikon D810, a 70-400 F4 at 70mm and an Impact 400s battery operated strobe.

Inspiration

the inspiration for this photo came from the old buildings and warehouses in the area. I like to drive around looking for places to make photos, when I find a place I like I will take a couple of photos of it and save the location on my GPS. it is when I am discussing ideas with the model that I pick a location that I feel with match the shoot ideas instead of picking a location first I like to pick the theme first.

Editing

Post was done with Lightroom and Macphun.

In my camera bag

I normally carry my digital body and a couple of lenses and at least on film camera when i go out. I try not to bring too many lenses to a shoot. It causes me to worry too much about equipment instead of worrying about making photos.

Feedback

The only advise I would offer is to know your camera, it is important to understand the relationship between aperture and shutter speed vs light output. Understanding this relationship will help you make the back ground as dark or as light as you want when compared to the subject.
