Behind The Lens

Location

I took this image in my living room using the creating a black background technique I read about on petapixel by Glyn Dewis

Time

I shot this mid-evening.

Lighting

I wanted to create a moody black and white so I put a black v-flat behind my subject and lit him from the right at a 45 degree angle.

Equipment

Canon 7d with a 50mm lens at 18.0. Shot at 100 iso and 1/250

Inspiration

I was looking to create a moody black and white of my son. He has the typical photographer syndrome issue and always gives such serious looks while I photograph them. I wanted to take that look and build an image around it. I had also just read an article on faking a black background and I wanted to try out this technique.

Editing

I took the image into PS and corrected white balance and processed it as a black and white.

In my camera bag

Canon 7d, 50mm 1.4, 100mm 2.8, Sigma Art 18-35, Yongnuo 568ii, Canon 430ii

Feedback

Bring your aperture up until the entire photo is black. Once you have achieved this bring in some directional light from your OCF.
