This photo was taken on a rip to Sydney. Iwas actually doing "reflections" that day but saw this and knew it had something special.Time
This was taken around the middle of the day, but it was in a shady area. It's hand held as I didn't have a tripod with me that day.Lighting
There was beautiful backlight coming off some surrounging buildings that accentuated the structure and lines of the plant. I took several images to make sure I got the angel, position and best lighting I could.Equipment
I took this with the Canon EOS 350D, 85mm on a zoom lens, no tripod or flash, just pretty basic actually.Inspiration
I love lines and textures, but had gone out to get reflections in the buildings in the Sydney CBD. Nature and landscapes are my favourite subjects. I guess even though I wasn't looking specifically for this shot, I always look at everything to see if there's anything that captures my eye. On this day, this plant did. I think the unusal curves in the front leaf made me look twice.Editing
I used Photoshop to post process this image. The orginal image was actually flipped to get the curved leaf on the right as this seemed more appealing and resolved than on the left. I love black and white images so it was an easy choice to convert this and this helped to accentuate the textures and lines. I had to do some minor repairs to remove some debri from the leaves, then used extra contrast to bring out the lighter edges of the leaves.In my camera bag
At the time I was a Canon gal, but I have now moved to the Olympus OMD. The two main reasons for this is the ease of use and the compact, light weight features of the OMD and lenses. I have bursitis in my right shoulder and struglle with the larger cameras and lenses now.Feedback
My advise is to always be ready to capture an image, even if it's only on your phone. As they say, the best camera is the one you have with you. The more you practice capturing images and making art, the better you'll be at it. For a striking image it needs to be special or different in some way than what people see every day. There are so many images out there now, you need to make it stand out from the crowd somehow. Take the images you like. Don't worry about what others say....do it for you.
