Behind The Lens

Location

All of the photographs in my Wonderland series were taken indoors in my studio. We live in a wooded hamlet just north of New York City, and my garden has inspired me for the past 20 years.

Time

This image was captured in the late afternoon. Indoors in the dark.

Lighting

I create these images in a darkened room, using an Epson scanner to capture the details and essence of each object. The scanning technique delivers consistent lighting, extremely sharp detail, and a shallow depth of focus.

Equipment

The images are created using a flatbed Epson scanner in total darkness.

Inspiration

Springtime is always a very busy time for photographing the new arrivals in the garden. This trio of beauties caught my eye with their graceful demeanor and incredible colors. They seemed like dancers! Each photo I create gives me an intimate look into the nature of things. The complexity and beauty of a small flower is beyond belief. After over 20 years of working on these images, I look at the world in a completely different way.

Editing

I often have to do some retouching on the black background, especially if there is pollen involved. (And sometimes I leave the pollen in the picture!) I do very little to boost the sharpness or saturation.

In my camera bag

The scanner won't fit in the bag, alas...

Feedback

Find things that capture your curiosity, things you are drawn to, beautiful things, rusty things, broken things, old baseballs, rocks, petals, pennies, pinecones, whatever stops you in your tracks! Plant a garden, take a walk, pick things up, go on a treasure hunt. Anything can be beautiful if you honor it with a portrait. All scanners are different so you should experiment and see what works for you. I try to scan the images at a very high resolution so that they can be blown up as large as possible.
