Black background brings out the image. There is such intricate color work. Excellent.

Location
I took this photo right in my backyard in Washington, New Hampshire.Time
I shot this image at 9pm in early September. I had just gotten my lighting equipment set up in my new apartment, and was feeling the need to take some shots with my friend. Luckily, I didn't have to go too far!Lighting
I had never really taken pictures of insects before and the only lighting I had at the time was my very inexpensive, and simple soft box. Even though it was inexpensive and simple, it did a nice job highlighting all the grasshopper's tiny details. I will note that having my soft box outside attracted a lot of unwanted attention from moths!Equipment
I shot this with my Canon 5D Mark II and my favorite 50mm lens. The only other equipment was my small soft box.Inspiration
I find myself often taking pictures of things that either scare me, or are really intriguing. Well, this grasshopper was sitting right on my front step and I am both terrified, and intrigued by them! When I first saw the grasshopper, I noticed that one of his legs had been missing, so I knew it wouldn't be able to jump at my face. I had to have my fiancé hold the stick up while I quickly took some shots. The grasshopper didn't budge the whole time!Editing
The only thing I did to to this image was increase the contrast to bring out the small details. In my camera bag
I always have my Canon 50mm lens with me because I love all the images I produce with it. I will also carry my Canon 24-70mm lens because it's so versatile and I really enjoy using it for portraiture. I have extra memory cards, batteries, a charger, a small cleaning cloth, Photomaster flash, a Sekonic light meter, and various other things. Lastly is my camera, the Canon 5D Mark II.Feedback
Try to look in flowers, bushes, trees, and the dirt to find the most interesting looking insect. Keep the weather in mind when looking because that will impact what kinds of bugs are out. Use a macro lens, a nice light source, and don't be afraid to take pictures of what scares you because that might end up being your best image!
